The seminar “Change of scale – Change of nature” will welcome

Guillaume Carnino and Clément Marquet

De la salle des machines au data center :

effets de seuil et industrialisation de la production informatique

From the machine room to the data center: threshold effects and industrialization of IT production

Formerly a computer engineer, Guillaume Carnino is now a lecturer in the history of science and technology (Cognitive Research and Enaction Design, Costech, UTC). His research interests include the epistemological and industrial foundations of technology; more specifically, he is a contemporaryist and works on the history of industrial quantification and computer science, especially datacenters.

Clément Marquet is a post-doctoral fellow at the Alexandre Koyre Center (EHESS) and at Costech (UTC). His research focuses on the materiality of the digital world. After a PhD on the design of informational infrastructures and the territorial stakes of data centers, he is now studying the industrialization processes at work in the deployment of data centers and the environmental consequences of the proliferation of digital technologies.

The research seminar « Change of scale – Change of nature »

Le sémThe generalist and interdisciplinary seminar “Change of scale – Change of nature” is organized by the CSI and the Eco-anthropology laboratory of the Natural History Museum by Léo Mariani (MNHN, Eco-anthropology), Julien Blanc (MNHN, Eco-anthropology), Brice Laurent (CNRS, CSI) and Jean Goizauskas (Mines Paris, CSI). Postulating that changes in scale (re)condition the nature of things as well as the observations made of them, this seminar intends to raise the issues of measurement and commensurability, of growth and degrowth.
