Maud Chalmandrier joined the CSI in July 2024 as a visiting researcher, as part of a post-doc mobility fellowship funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, for the project: « Practices and professions of urban pest management : a more-than-human approach to ecologization ».
At the crossroads of environmental geography and science and technology studies, her research interests include the history of (urban) ecology, knowledges and cultures of urban nature, human-animal relationships.
Projects
During her PhD, she studied the emergence and development of the urban as a place and object of knowledge in ecology in Switzerland, in order to understand how it both redefines natures of the city and the ecological science.
Her current post-doctoral research explores how urban pest management is affected by the process of ecologization. Combining approaches of animal geography and sociology of work, it investigates the relationship between everyday practices of pest controllers across urban spaces and the changing nature of their work in public administration. Her research is based on an ethnographic study of the management of rats and bedbugs in the parisian public administration.
