Measuring the environmental footprint of digital technology:

issues and controversies

Abstract: The measurement of the environmental footprint of digital technology is currently the subject of controversy over the relevant metrics and the estimates that are being produced. This exploratory investigation uses social science tools to analyze how these metrics are made, discussed, and debated. Three social spaces are studied: the academic world, think-tanks and public institutions, and the press. The study highlights the significant circulation of metrics, figures and methods between these three worlds, and the divergences they maintain in their relationship to uncertainty.

Date: March 9, 2023, 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm

The seminar will be held by videoconference. Participation is upon registration only.
