Collective organisation and maintenance of a community infrastructure of digital services

Summary: As a member of the Collectif des Hébergeurs Alternatifs, Transparents, Ouverts, Neutres et Solidaires (CHATONS) [Collective of Alternative, Transparent, Open, Neutral and Supportive Hosting Providers], the Deuxfleurs association provides “essential” digital services to the public (websites, mailboxes, videoconferencing, chat, collaborative suite…). Its main originality lies in its minimalist infrastructure: 8 second-hand computers, spread over 3 members’ homes, honourably serve several hundred users. This minimalism comes at the price of a disconcerting technical complexity: it is hard to find simple solutions. In this seminar, we will present the challenges and open questions facing our association, both technically and organisationally: how can we raise awareness and overcome asymmetries of power, knowledge and participation? How can we organise the maintenance of these digital services on a collegial and voluntary basis? How can we facilitate the arrival of new energies? This seminar will provide food for thought and, we hope, new avenues for future research in a number of disciplines.

Date : Thursday 21 November from 2pm to 4pm
The seminar will be held by videoconference. Participation is upon registration only.
