A conversation with Ève Chiapello and Alexandre Violle
The Interdisciplinary Institute on Innovation (i3) and the library of Mines Paris – PSL are hosting a joint event with Ève Chiapello and Alexandre Violle. They will be presenting their book Sociologie des circuits financiers. Les infrastructures de l’argent et leur politique on Thursday, May 22, 2025, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.
Alexandre Mallard, director of i3, will moderate the discussion.

Comment suivre l’argent et rendre compte de son rôle dans la formulation et la mise en œuvre des politiques publiques ? À partir de la mise en place d’un cadre conceptuel ambitieux, l’ouvrage opère une plongée au cœur des opérations matérielles et des infrastructures qui font circuler l’argent.
Comment les sciences sociales peuvent-elles mettre en œuvre l’injonction à « suivre l’argent » ? Comment les circuits de l’argent rendent-ils possibles tout en les contraignant les politiques publiques européennes ou nationales ?
La sociologie des circuits financiers propose de croiser une sociologie inspirée par les travaux de Viviana Zelizer et les infrastructures studies afin d’aboutir à une compréhension fine de la matérialité de la circulation de l’argent. Une série d’études de cas empiriquement fouillées illustrent la fécondité de la démarche.
L’ouvrage donne accès aux mondes de l’argent institutionnel, aux significations sociales et politiques inscrites dans les infrastructures informatiques, juridiques et comptables, et aux interdépendances entre circuits financiers et politiques publiques. Les chapitres permettent d’éclairer comment les politiques de l’argent transforment à la fois l’État et le capitalisme.
Sociology of financial circuits. Money infrastructures and their policies
How can money be traced and its role in the formulation and implementation of public policy be accounted for? Using an ambitious conceptual framework, this book delves into the heart of the material operations and infrastructures of money circulation.
How can the injunction to “follow the money” be implemented by the social sciences? How do money circuits both enable and constrain European and national public policies? The sociology of money circuits provides a detailed understanding of the materiality of money circulation, combining a sociology inspired by the work of Viviana Zelizer and infrastructure studies. A series of empirical case studies illustrate this fruitful approach. The book provides access to the worlds of institutional money, to the social and political meanings inscribed in IT, legal and accounting infrastructures, and to the interdependencies between financial circuits and public policy. The chapters illuminate how the politics of money transforms both the state and capitalism.

Eve Chiapello is Professor at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS, Paris), where she holds the chair of “sociology of the transformations of capitalism”.
Alexandre Violle holds a Ph.D. in Science, technology, and society from the École des Mines de Paris and is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the Centre de sociologie de l’innovation.
