In the debates on financialization and assetization, property is often referred to as an important aspect of the delineation, disentangling, valuing and claiming of assets. Yet, it often assumes the role of a background condition and is rarely made into a key term for in the analysis itself. While many economic categories, such as value, futurity or capitalization, have been innovatively adapted to the contemporary financial constitution, property has not been taken up in this effort of rethinking finance and economy to the same extent. This paper puts property to the test. Based on a case study on the financialization of rental housing, it develops a “pragmatics of property” for financialization and assetization. The paper contends that a recalibrated notion of property improves our understanding of the politics of financialization and assetization.
