Madeleine Akrich

Madeleine Akrich has been a member of Center for the sociology of innovation since 1983, and was its director from 2003 to 2013. She has devoted a significant part of her career to the development of a socio-anthropology of techniques, paying particular attention to the role of users. In a second phase, her interest has focused on the contribution of patients and people experiencing illness to the production of knowledge and expertise, whether through their participation in e-mail groups or social networks, or in an organized setting within patients’ associations.

If it is obvious that the CSI wouldn’t have been what it was without Bruno Latour’s presence, it is also likely that Bruno Latour wouldn’t have been exactly the same without the CSI: the CSI has always been a collective characterized by its plurality, in terms of research fields in particular, and by a quality of exchange that is its strength. With his great generosity, Bruno Latour offered a lot to the CSI: his ability to articulate issues or disciplines that may seem far apart, his academic network, his enthusiasm and his tremendous energy. Beyond Bruno Latour’s exceptional intellectual power, Madeleine Akrich chose to highlight two particular aspects of his talent: Bruno Latour was a true writer who carefully designed the form of each book to meet his intellectual project; and he was a creative spirit who never ceased to experiment, without worrying about failure, whether it be with teaching methods, academic work formats or even academic work modalities.

Madeleine Akrich recently published “The many facets of Bruno Latour”, Technoscienza, 2023, 14(2), 45-49.
